Changes and updates made at the National Convention Oct. 17th, 2003

1. Any AAU team may have a maximum of 3 players from Canada or Mexico to participate in our Division I tournament provided the register and play in the association that they will be playing. No complete teams from Canada or Mexico may participate in a Division I tournament but would be allowed to participate in our Division II tournament.

2. Approved Super Regional Tournaments beginning in 2004 with details to be determined by the Executive Committee.

3. Change the 14U/15U to the same format at Nationals as the 16U/17U/18U. (6 or 7 team pools with all teams advancing to single elimination bracket)

4. Change the format for the “Shootout Tournaments”: All who do not qualify for the Championship bracket go directly to a Modified Double Elimination Bracket with no “IF” game.

5. Player Eligibility - Each and every player participating in the National Championships must have been present at her own Association Qualifying Tournament. The National Chair and a designated committee will review any exception due to injury or other unavoidable circumstance. Any player in question must have her name appear on the official scoring rosters as part of her team’s entry. THAT DECISION IS FINAL.

To be eligible to participate in the National tournaments, (D1 & D2) a player’s name must be on the roster of her team and her name appears in the score book at the Association Qualifying Tournament (AQT)

6. Roster Additions - A team shall be allowed to add a maximum of three (3) players to their official roster used when advancing to a National Championship with an overall maximum of fifteen (15) players.

Pick-up players may be either from the same age division AQT or from the same CLUB in any other of the AQT Age Division as long as they qualify by age and residence.

EXAMPLE: A 14 year old, who played for a Club in the AQT in the 15 & under age division but did not qualify for the National D 1 tournament, may then be picked up by another of her Clubs 14, 15, 16, 17 or 18/u team that qualify for a National Championship. No player whose team has qualified for a Division I Championship may be picked up for Division II.

7. Allow up to two (2) 18 & under teams from each Association to advance to the Division I National Championship without participating in an Association Qualifying Tournament (AQT). However, teams must participate in their AQT to retain any seed earned from the previous 17 & under tournament. The National Chair may designate additional at-large teams from any Association.

Possible Meeting Before Our Annual Meeting

We have been considering holding a Pre-Annual AAU meeting to give members a chance to talk over ideas and concerns before our official Annual Meeting in October. I have made a post on our message board and need to know how many would want to come and discuss ideas for the future of AAU.

If we get enough interest we will try to hold the meeting in late September. If we don't get much interest we will only conduct our Annual Meeting in October.

You can either respond to me directly  or you can simply reply to the question on the message board. To date I have only had four responses to this meeting.

Please let us know if you would like to attend.

Indiana AAU Girls Basketball Committee Chair

February, 2003

There has been an amendment to the 2003 Rules Manual

Section III  Item #2 Adjustment of the Pick-Up Rule

This ruling is incorrect.  The actual ruling on pick up players is the same as in past years.  The player must be in the same age group, and must play in the association qualifier, and or state finals of that age group.  The ruling in the 2003 rules manual has been tabled to be voted on at the 2004 convention.  We apologize for any confusion, and we will attach a reminder of this change in the packets that will be mailed out Feb. 10, 2003.

2003 AAU Packets to be Sent Out Soon

The 2003 AAU season is quickly approaching.  We are currently in the process of making all the appropriate updates and changes to the new manual.  Once we finish with the changes and updates, we will begin to send out all the info for the 2003 season to all teams that participated last year.

You will find that there are some changes to the format used last year.  The biggest one we have already discussed below.  That is the addition of a modified double elimination format for Level I State Finals in all age groups.

The second significant change will be that the top 4 seeds in each age group for the 2003 season will be given a bye at the regional tournament.  This means that the top 4 teams will move directly to the state finals in their age group.  The seeds for 2003 are determined by finish in the 2002 state tournament.  (Example:  If you finished 1st in 11U in 2002, then you would be the #1 seed in 12U for 2003)  If any of the top 4 teams from 2002, do not return for the 2003 season, then the next place seeded team (#5 in 2002),  would be given the next spot up (#4), and so on until all top 4 seeds are filled.

There are other changes that have happened, and the majority of them have already been discussed.  If you have questions about these announcements or any other questions, please feel free to email us.
