Change of Format for 2003 Level I State Finals
For the upcoming 2003 AAU season there has been a change in the format of all age group Level I State Finals. The change will be going from the single elimination format, to a modified double elimination style format. With this change all teams will have the opportunity to play through the loser's bracket and still gain a berth to the Nationals in their respective age group. We are still working on the final break down of how it will all work, but it will give all teams a second chance at advancing.
The Level II, and Level III State Finals will be played the same as in years past. It will still be a single elimination format with teams playing out all 16 positions. We will be posting more info as it becomes available.

After much thought we have decided to move our Indiana AAU website. With the new address we hope it will be easier for our viewers to find our site, and possibly make it easier for more people to find us. We hope that everyone will have a great time dealing with the new address.
The new site will also make it easier and faster to post items to the site. We hope this will make things better for up-to-date posting of News, and when the time comes for posting brackets and scores for the games. We will be working very hard in the upcoming days to make things better and better for our Association.
If you do come up with questions, please feel free to give us a call, or you can always email us. Our new chairperson looks forward to any thoughts or suggestions and will strive to answer any and all responses.

The following are updates to the National Convention report:
1) The item about players being "locked" to a team once they play in a qualifier has been overturned by the National Board of Review. The old rule where players are "locked" to their team once they play in any sanctioned game/event goes back in effect.
2) There was an adjustment of the "Pick-up" rule for teams advancing to Nationals.
It now states: Teams are allowed to pick up any player (still a maximum of three) to advance to Division I Nationals as long as they satisfy age, residence and membership requirements. Participation in Association Qualifying Tournament is not required. (Similar to J. O. Games). This allows a player to be picked for an older age division than the one she may have participated in her Association Qualifying Tournament. However, no one whose team qualifies for Division I Nationals may be picked up to participate in the Division II Nationals.
3) The following dates and deadlines have been established for the 2003 Nationals:

(10/17/02)
Format for 16U, 17U, 18U Nationals modified
The format for the AAU 16U, 17U and 18U Girls Basketball Nationals has been modified to include six- or seven-team pools and all teams advancing to single-elimination championship bracket play, following a vote of Association chairs and the Girls Basketball National Executive Committee at the 115th AAU Convention at Wailea, Hawaii.
The change was made as a one-year experiment to be evaluated in 2003 and then reconsidered at the 116th annual convention next October in Las Vegas. The primary purposes of the change were to reduce costs to participating teams by shortening the overall length of the National Tournament while also increasing the pre-scheduled games in pool play and guaranteeing all teams a minimum of six games in the event (five pool games and at least one bracket game).
Generally, teams in 16U, 17U and 18U age divisions will be placed in six-team pools, but seven-team pools will be used to accommodate teams if the total number is not divisible by six. Pool play will be played over three days, with bracket play conducted over the next three days. That would mean a six-day period for competition compared to eight days of competition in previous format.
The previous format consisted of four- or three-team pools played over two days with the top two teams in each pool advancing to a double-elimination championship
bracket. The third- and fourth-place teams advanced to a Shootout pool, followed by a single-elimination bracket. This format will continue for 2003 for the 10U, 11U, 12U, 13U, 14U and 15U Nationals.
Among other news from the Girls Basketball national meeting:
* Carroll Graham of Altus, Okla., was re-elected as National Chair for a four-year term; Kathy Campbell of Monkton, Md., was re-elected as National Certification Chair for a four-year term. The rest of the Girls Basketball National Committee is appointed by the Chair, and Mr. Graham indicated the only change from 2002 was the resignation of Ms. Kimberly Long of Dallas.
* The numbers of teams necessary to qualify teams to Nationals was modified as follows: 10U, 4 or more teams, top 4 teams advance. 11U, 3-9 teams, 1 advances; 10-17 teams, 2 advance; 18-35, 3 advance; 36 or more, 4 advance. 12U, same as 11s. 13U, same as 11s. 14U, same as 11s. 15U, same as 11s. 16U, same as 11s. 17U, same as 11s. 18U, 3-8 teams, 2 advance; 9-12 teams, 3 advance; 13 or more, 4 advance.
* A player is "locked" to her team at the moment she plays for a team in the Association Qualifier (regional or state). Previously, players were to be "locked" whenever they played in any AAU-sanctioned event for a given competition year.
* What has been known as the "NIC" events have been renamed the "Division II Nationals" with "the Nationals" to be renamed the "Division I Nationals." The Division II Nationals events are open to teams that do not qualify for the Division I Nationals or play in a level other than "Level I" within the Association.
* Updates on Division I Nationals for 2003 were heard from the following cities: 10U, Disney; 11U, Kenner, La.; 12U, Lafayette, La.; 13U, Dayton, Ohio; 14U, Clarksville, Tenn.; 15U, Virginia Beach, Va.; 16U, Cocoa Beach, Fla.; 17U/18U, Disney; JO Games, Detroit.

* Division I Nationals for 2004 were awarded as follows: 10U, Disney; 11U, Kenner, La.; 12U, Kingsport, Tenn.; 13U, Rochester, Minn.; 14U, Monroe, La.; 15U, Winston-Salem, N.C.; 16U, Chattanooga, Tenn.; 17U/18U, Disney; JO Games, Des Moines, Iowa.
* The Rawlings 10-panel basketball was adopted as the official basketball for AAU National Championships in all age groups. The ball was used in the 16U Nationals in 2002.
* In the 17U/18U Division I Nationals, the Opening Ceremony will be discontinued.
* Upcoming meetings with NCAA administrators will be key in determining what that organization may require with regard to certifying future events for recruiting purposes and the AAU developing a program to meet those requirements.
* The AAU Girls Basketball Committee selected Howard "Peanut" and Marianne Cummins of Tennessee as "Volunteers of the Year" and Bill Christy of North Carolina as winner of the "Ruthie Webster Memorial Award."
* Mike Armstrong of the Indy Falcons club was recognized as the Indiana Volunteer of the Year. This came after Armstrong coached the North Team to the gold medal in the USA Basketball Women's Youth Development Festival. He also coached several teams in Indiana AAU competition and hosted two association events.

The Indiana Association AAU girls basketball program registered 6,805 members in 2002, falling from the top spot in registrations for the first time in more than a decade.
Michigan, with 9,091 members, and the five-state New England Association, with 7,980 members, knocked the Indiana

Each of the top 10 associations except Indiana had record-setting totals of registrations. Indiana's high was 9,345 in 1997, with numbers dropping to 9,309 in 1998, 8,608 in 1999, 8,354 in 2000 and 8,425 in 2001.

Schedules set for two high school shootouts
Indiana Association AAU High School Team Developmental Shootouts will be staged as scheduled on June 29-30 at Lafayette Jefferson High School (and Tecumseh Middle School) and July 15-16 at Indy Indoor Sports Park.
There were not enough entries to warrant two sites on June 29-30 or July 15-16, so events at Frankton/Lapel and Indianapolis Perry Meridian have been cancelled. In addition, there were not enough entries for an event scheduled July 12-14 at Indianapolis North Central, so that event also has been cancelled.
Twelve teams have entered the June 29-30 event in Lafayette, six in the "A" Division and six in the "B" division. Eight teams, all in the "A" Division, will play July 15-16 at Indy Indoor Sports Park.
The July 15-16 event at IISP is in the NCAA evaluation period and has been certified so that NCAA coaches may come and evaluate players. As part of the certification requirements, a mandatory NCAA Initial-Eligibility Seminar is part of the July 15 schedule for all players on all teams that have entered the event.
Schedules for both June 29-30 and July 15-16 are available by clicking on "Tournament Draws" to the left.
(6/13/02)
Three July High School Shootouts receive NCAA certification
The three Indiana Association AAU High School Team Developmental Shootouts scheduled for July have received certification by the NCAA that will allow NCAA coaches to attend the events and evaluate players.
The events were set up at the request of high school coaches last fall to take advantage of the IHSAA's lifting of summer restrictions of school coaches working with their own players and the number of players from the same school on a summer team.
The events that are open to NCAA coaches for evaluation are July 12-14 at Washington Township Schools in Indianapolis (North Central High School), July 15-16 at Indy Indoor Sports Park and July 15-16 at Perry Township Schools (Perry Meridian High School). There also are High School Team Developmental Shootouts scheduled June 28-30 at Lafayette Jefferson and Frankton/Lapel, but those are not during the NCAA viewing period.
The entry deadline for these events was June 7, but late entries will be accepted through June 11. Plans are to set schedules for these events by June 13 and mail them to coaches the next day.

Tournament Notes - 4/29/02
The 8th-Grade Level II Finals will be using the revised bracket issued on April 10, not the original one issued on April 4. The change is because there now will be a 16-team finals instead of
a 14-team finals.
Additional notes:
14U, 15U, 16U, 17U/18U Developmental Tournament draws will be Tuesday. There are 28 teams in 14U (16 will play at Indy Indoor Sports Park, 12 will play at Plainfield), 16 teams in 15U (all at
IISP), 16 teams in 16U (all at Perry Meridian) and 8 teams in 17U/18U (all at Perry Meridian).
14U and 15U regional and state draws will be Thursday. There are 39 teams in 14U Level I (plus the 8th Grade teams that played earlier). That will allow five teams to qualify for Nationals (four plus one bonus team for an Indiana team in the top four at Nationals last year). There are
28 teams in 15U (three will qualify for Nationals).
16U, 17U and 18U draws will be Tuesday, May 7. There are 24 teams in 16U (three will qualify for Nationals). There are 20 teams in 17U (three will qualify for Nationals). There are 8 teams in 18U (two will qualify for Nationals).
For regional play, the 16U teams will play in eight pools of three with a cross-pool game for its third game. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the finals.
In 17U, the top four seeds will receives byes directly to the finals. The remaining 16 teams will play regionals in four pools of four. The top three teams from each pool will advance to the finals.
In 18U, the teams will play finals only.

Note changes for Regional/State draws
After the Regional/State draws of last week, a number of teams found they were entered in the wrong divisions – in some cases because they filled the paperwork out incorrectly and in other cases because an entry packet was misfiled. In addition, two teams have asked to drop out of regional events. In a couple of cases, there were typographical errors in pool sheets or brackets that needed correcting.
In order to correct various problems and place each team in the correct division, your event has been affected. Our office will mail updated pool sheets to all affected teams. Here is a summary of the changes:
1) Franklin Lady Cubs, 5th Level III/Pool E in Columbus, move to 5th Level II/Pool D in Columbus.
2) North Vermillion Falcons, 5th Level III/Pool D in Mooresville, drops out.
3) Monrovia, 13U Open/Pool B in Franklin, moves to 8th Grade/Level II Pool B in Franklin; also, Lady Arties and Hoosier Hoops, 13U Open Pool B in Franklin, move to 13U Open/Pool A in Franklin.
4) Hoosier Alley Oop, 13U Open/Pool C in Columbus, moves to 8th Grade Level II/Pool B in Franklin; also, Bedford Swoosh (7), 13U Open/Pool D in Columbus, moves to 13U Open/Pool D at Perry Meridian.
5) CG Explosion, 13U Open/Pool C at Perry Meridian, moves to 8th Grade Level II/Pool B at Franklin; also, CG Red Storm, 13U Open/Pool D at Perry Meridian, moves to 8th Grade Level II/Pool G at Perry Meridian.
6) Brownsburg Lady Dogs, 13U Open/Pool D at Perry Meridian, moves to 8th Grade Level II/Pool B at Franklin.
7) B.C. Stars, 8th Grade Level II/Pool C at New Palestine, drops out.
8) Indy Falcons-Gennrich, 8th Grade Level II/Pool G at Perry Meridian, moves to 8th Grade Level II/Pool C at New Palestine.
9) Carver Lady Spartans should be team A2 in 12U Open at Russiavialle; Carver Wizards had been typed in twice and is correct as team B3 at the same site.
10) Brackets for the 12U/13U State Finals at Hamilton Southeastern were revamped with new gym assignments; also, Line 6 was changed from “1st Franklin B” to “2nd Franklin A” as two three-team pools are now one five-team pool.
11) Brackets for the 7th Grade and 8th Grade Level II Finals at Indianapolis Southport were changed; the 7th Grade has time and gym changes for Games 6 and 7; the 8th Grade bracket has been completely restructured as a 16-team tournament; the top two teams in Franklin Pool B were added to complete the 16-team field.
12) The bracket for the 7th Grade Level III Finals at Lafayette Jeff was corrected to show “New Palestine B” in two places where “New Palestine C” was a typographical error.

Indiana AAU Girls Basketball Rules UPDATE
The Indiana Association AAU Girls Basketball Executive Committee has
reconsidered the issue of what constitutes the makeup of "School Teams" and has voted to modify Levels I, II and III as use them as follows:
-- Level III will be for Grade-Based School Teams that have players from one school or one school corporation.
-- Level II will be for Grade-Based School Teams that have players from one school corporation plus players private/Catholic/Christian schools from
their geographic area OR players from two adjacent school corporations.
-- Level I will be the Age-Group Open Division. All teams may enter this division, but all teams that do not meet the criteria for Levels II or
III must enter this division.
Because entry paperwork gives only "Open" or "School" options, the tournament commissioners teams wishing to enter Level II or Level III should
both mark "School" as well as list the "Grade" they are entering. The commissioner will then sort the School entries into Level II or Level III
based on meeting the criteria as listed above.
Level I entries should be marked "Open" with the appropriate "Age Group" listed.
For the Developmental Tournaments, teams meeting both Level II and Level III requirements will be allowed in the "School Team Divisions."
Separate from the above issue, School Teams are reminded that the Grade-Level School Team divisions that have been started DO have an "age
cap."
-- What we're playing as 5th Grade will be reported to AAU National as 11U Level II or III, and all players must be born on or after Jan. 1, 1990.
-- What we're playing as 6th Grade will be reported to AAU National as 12U Level II or III, and all players must be born on or after Jan. 1, 1989.
-- What we're playing as 7th Grade will be reported to AAU National as 13U Level II or III, and all players must be born on or after Jan. 1, 1988.
-- What we're playing as 8th Grade will be reported to AAU National as 14U Level II or III, and all players must be born on or after Jan. 1, 1987.
For example, if an 8th grader has a 1986 birthday, she is INELIGIBLE for our 8th Grade School Division. She would be OK to play in 15U Open.
Another example: If a 7th grader has a 1987 birthday, she is INELIGIBLE for the 7th Grade School Division. She could play in the 8th Grade Division
or in the 14U Open.
