16U Nationals tournament organizers adjust schedule for college coaches
Due to an oversight in submitting the required paperwork to the NCAA for event certification, the organizers of the 16U AAU Nationals have made schedule changes that will allow college coaches to observe all teams and players at the tournament for at least one day. In order for NCAA-member college coaches to evaluate players during the summer at an event, the event must be certified with the NCAA. Because of a delay in submitting the necessary paperwork, college coaches can only observe players from July 11-14, three days after the start of the official NCAA evaluation period. The official July 7 statement from AAU regarding the changes is as follows:
In a decision reached this afternoon, the NCAA Sanction period for Division I College Coaches for the 16: Under AAU Girls' Basketball National Championships begins July 11, 2001. In an effort to accommodate Division I College coaches the Shoot Out Tournament will begin on Tuesday, July 10th and continue until Friday, July 13th. On Wednesday, July 11th the Gold Division of the Shoot Out (consisting of 10 teams that were eliminated from the Losers Bracket of the Championship Bracket will begin play and end on Friday, July 13th. The result of these changes will allow all teams to be evaluated by Division I College coaches from Wednesday, July 11 through Saturday, July 14th. Pool Play begins on Saturday July 7th and continues on July 8th. Championship play will begin on Monday, July 9th and conclude July 14th.

Overwhelming entries for 14U through18U Developmental Tournaments require new sites
Due to an overwhelming number of entries for the 14U through 18U Developmental Tournaments set for May 11-13, site changes have been made to accommodate all entries in each age group. Those age groups who will be at new sites include all 15U teams, who will be at New Castle instead of Southport, and all 16U teams, who will be at Franklin instead of New Castle. Developmental Tournaments in age groups 14U (at Southport) and combined 17U & 18U (at New Castle) will remain at the sites originally planned. Site changes may create some inconveniences for traveling teams with respect to hotel accommodations, but the site changes were made to include the unexpectedly large number of teams submitting entries. The draw for these Developmental Tournaments will take place on on Monday, April 30, and will be posted on this website soon after. (4/26/01)
2001 tournament entries determine the number of national qualifiers for each age group
Please note that there is modified information on this news item with regard to the number of entries in 18U. It was previously stated that 8 teams had entered the 18U tournament. The correct number is 12 entries, which will allow three teams to qualify for nations in that age group instead of just two.
As set out in Section III Rule 17 of the 2001 Indiana Association Rules Manual, the number of state tournament entries in each age group determines the number of qualifiers representing Indiana in this year's AAU National Tournaments. The entries for all state tournaments are now closed, and qualifiers for each age group from Indiana will be as follows:
10U - 4 qualifiers (48+ entries)
11U - 4 qualifiers (48+ entries)
12U - 4 qualifiers (48+ entries)
13U - 4 qualifiers (48+ entries)
14U - 4 qualifiers (48+ entries)
15U - 4 qualifiers (48+ entries)
16U - 3 qualifiers (40 entries)
17U - 2 qualifiers (16 entries)
18U - 2 qualifiers (12 entries)
The tournament draw for age groups 14U through 18U will take place on Monday, May 7. Draw results will be posted on this website soon after. (4/26/01, modified 5/1/01)
Regional tournaments for 17U and 18U deemed not necessary
The number of entries for the state tournament in the 17U and 18U age groups are not high enough to warrant a Regionals playoff format to advance to the state tournament. Therefore, all 17U and 18U teams will advance directly to the state tournament slated for June 8-10 at the Indy Indoor Sports Park. There were 40 entries in the 16U age group, which will require playoffs at the Regional level on June 1-3 at the Indy Indoor Sports Park on the south side of Indianapolis. (4/26/01)

National AAU adopts Coaches Code of Ethics
At the AAU National Convention held recently in San Diego, the National AAU Association adopted the following Coaches Code of Ethics, which has been incorporated into the Indiana AAU Girls Basketball Manual.
I
will place the emotional and physical well-being of my players ahead of a
personal desire to win.
I
will treat each player as an individual, remembering the large range of
emotional and physical development for the same age group.
I
will take reasonable measures to honor all commitments to athletes.
I
will do my best to provide a safe playing situation for my players.
I
will promise to review and practice the basic first aid principles needed to
treat injuries of my players.
I
will lead by example in demonstrating fair play and sportsmanship to all my
players.
I
will do my best to organize practices that are fun and challenging for all
my players.
I
will provide a sports environment for my team that is free of drugs,
tobacco, and alcohol, and I will refrain from their use at all youth sports
events.
I
will be knowledgeable in the rules of girls' basketball and I will teach
these rules to my players.
I
will use those coaching techniques appropriate for each of the skills that I
teach.
I will remember that I am a youth sports coach, and that the game is for children and not for adults.
